The original RX was always a controversial amp design with its highly percussive response, “in your face” drive, immediate attack, and high level of pinch note harmonics ( as demonstrated on "Dead City" featuring Buddy Whittington.)

A collaboration between Master Tele Player Brad Paisley, and Master Amp Builder Mike Zaite has given birth to the all new Prescription Extra Strength. The new "RX ES" is completely revised, from the input jacks to the output jacks it shares no circuits with old RX.

The RX ES design structure is unique for a DR.Z Amp, it uses an EF -86 pentode set up in a post EQ gain layout. This alignment yields a rich harmonic complexity and an almost active response from the tone stack. Its dual calibrated inputs allow for sustaining gain in the Hi input, and a rich warm clean in the Lo input jack. The RX ES also features a footswitchable "Overdose" mode, which engages a 3 dB boost for added drive and gain without altering the preset tone, same EQ'd tone just much more DRIVE.

The RX ES uses two 12AX7 tubes in position VI and V3.

In the center of the RX ES design is an EF-86 pentode gain stage in position V2.

The EF-86 has an increased bandwidth and double the output gain of a typical 12AX7.

The Overdose gain boost is connected to this stage, engaging this boost is likened to engaging the best OD pedal.

The output tubes are Groove Tube EL-84-S (Tesla variant), matched and balanced using a rating number of 6.

Finally, the RX ES uses a 5AR4 rectifier in it's power supply. Giving the over all amp a slight sag, the 5AR4 adds bloom and natural compression to each note.

 The JAZ 20/40 encompasses all your favorite qualities from Dr Z’s most popular models. With the front end of the MAZ series coupled to a cathode biased 4 6V6 output section the JAZ 20/40 is the most feature laden Z amp to date. No need to decide between buying a 20 watt or 40 watt amp. The JAZ 20/40 is both in one box. Like the Dr Z Remedy amp, the JAZ 20/40 has the amazing ½ power switch feature. There is zero change in tone and response when going between the ½ and full power modes. You just get more or less volume. The ½ power switch along with the master volume will allow you to dial the JAZ in for any size room. Sparkling, full bodied clean head room to lower wattage output tube grind…it’s all in there Full bias modulating output tube tremolo is on board as well. Output tube tremolo gives you a depth not heard with pedals or opticoupler circuits. You get deep pulsating swells of tremolo from the JAZ. Whether you desire slow and mellow or faster Bo Diddley sounds you can dial it in with ease via the speed and depth controls. Add in the tube driven reverb and you’ll be navigating the swamps of the bayou. Speaking of reverb, the JAZ 20/40 reverb circuit has been dialed in to produce a very lush verb. You’ll find it has great depth compared with other single knob reverbs.

The front panel features controls for volume, full EQ, master, speed, depth, and reverb. Around back is an effects loop, speaker outs (4, 8, and 16) and the ½ power switch. The reverb and tremolo can be turned on and off via the supplied 2 button footswitch. The JAZ 20/40 is available as a head, 1x12, and 2x10 combo. Adding the Z Brake Lite to a combo gives you the ultimate 1 amp rig. You’ll be equally suited for big outdoor stages and bedroom playing all with one amp.

You can turn it up to get maximum output tube distortion and dial it back to apartment dweller approved levels…tons of singing sustain that you can talk over. It has finally arrived - Dr.Z's first 6L6 offering!

The Galaxie is a channel switching (via footswitch) amp that combines classic tweed clean tones and smooth modern drive sounds. The clean channel nails the sweet swirling sound of classic tweed amps that have become the foundation of electric guitar tone. The drive channel is the result of Dr Z’s 20 years of design experience. You’ll find it has excellent sustain and a rich open sound with plenty of gain on tap for today’s needs.

The output transformer is made by the venerable Triad company and is to the original spec found in classic tweed amps like the Super, Pro, and low powered Twin. Great care was taken to accurately reproduce this transformer. Dr Z is very excited to use the Triad transformer in this design.

The preamp consists of three 12AX7s coupled to a dual 6L6 output section and rectified by a 5U4. The Galaxie features a pentode/triode switch on the rear of the amp. This will enable 40 watts in pentode setting and 30 watts in triode.

After a successful eight year production run, Dr. Z has upgraded and enhanced the classic tone of the MAZ-38. The updates include additional front-end gain (for a bit more drive at lower volumes), a larger output transformer for a wider bandwidth with clear lows and a less compressed sound. By incorporating the phase inverter design from the MAZ 18 Jr, the MAZ 38 Sr. now uses no negative feedback , which provides "more, more, more..." More "thickness" more harmonic content, and more sustain. We have also replaced the presence control with the extremely useful "Cut" control, another innovation of the MAZ 18 Jr. So the child reshaped the father, and the MAZ 38 Senior is the result.

The combination of all these improvements "adds some cholesterol" to the notes. This amp allows you to hear everything: pickups, wood, fretboard material, strings, pick attack. Tones are clear, crisp, and responsive to every one of the guitar player's nuances. The design improvements give you all this along with a little more drive and sustain. After the success of the MAZ-38, and a more than a few requests for the same tone in a smaller package, the Doctor set off to create this little beauty. As a result, the MAZ-18 "Junior" was born. Like most offspring, this "chip off the old block" began to take on a personality of its own. While the overall "sound shape" is similar to the MAZ-38, the "Junior" has a bit more gain.

Don't confuse the "18 Watt" with "weak and flabby"... you'll be amazed by the definition and headroom, all the way down to the low E... plenty of power for a single 12" speaker or 2 10" speakers (as pictured in the top photo.) you'll use this amp in small clubs and never think about needing to mic it... Got a larger venue? Mic it and play away, because big amp tone and soul is all there. This would also be a great amp for jazz guitarists, whether you're looking to replace a small blackface amp or looking for an amp with enough complexity for fusion.

The end result is an amp that every strat player will love, but it's not only for strats. The "Cut" knob may be the most useful and versitile tone shaping tool on any guitar amp. Throughout its range, it produces a large variety of sounds to satisfy players using all guitars for most every style of music. The "Cut" knob is best used after the EQ is all set; turn it up for extra edge, turn it down for a more vintage sound.

A perfect fit under or next to our 1x12 or 2x10 combos and an excellent match for any of our heads. The Dr Z 1x12 or 2x10 cab is like getting 2 speaker cabs for the price of one. We offer a removable rear panel which enables closed back or open back operation. Standard 12” speaker is the Celestion Vintage 30 (other Celestion speakers available on request, see your dealer). The 2x10 comes standard with our own Z 10” speakers.
